Scope of this calculator

Scope in

  • Private-sector workers covered by Qatar Labour Law Article 54.
  • Basic wage only, not gross pay or allowances.
  • Completed years of service plus a proportional fraction of a year.

Scope out

  • Domestic workers, who sit under a separate law.
  • Government employees.
  • Packages that replace gratuity with a written alternative scheme.
  • Disputed termination cases still under review.

Worked example

Basic wage QAR 8,000. Service 3 years 4 months, continuous, private sector. This tool follows the convention used in its own script: service is the calendar days between your two dates divided by 365, so 3 years 4 months is about 3.33 years, and each service year earns 21/30 of the last basic monthly wage. That gives 8,000 x 21/30 x 3.33 = about QAR 18,667 as a statutory-minimum estimate.

For ten months of service, this tool shows a manual-review message because the one-completed-year threshold is not met.

What to say next

  • Confirm the basic-wage figure on your contract or latest payslip.
  • Confirm your exact start and last working day from the employer record.
  • Ask HR in writing which basic wage and service period they used.
  • Compare their figure with this Art. 54 statutory-minimum estimate and cite Al Meezan Article 54.
  • Roll gratuity, unused leave and unserved notice into one planning figure with the Qatar Final Settlement Planner: https://gulfexpattools.com/qatar-final-settlement-planner/
  • See how Qatar compares with the other five GCC floors - Qatar is a flat 21 days, not the UAE 21/30 split: https://gulfexpattools.com/gcc-gratuity-compared/

How this calculator works

Article 54 requires at least three weeks of last basic wage for each service year after one completed year, with proportional treatment for fractions of a year.

What people get wrong, and who maintains this

Article 54 is a flat three weeks, not the UAE split

Qatar Labour Law Article 54 sets a floor of at least three weeks (21 days) of the last basic wage for every completed year of service - the same 21 days in year one and in year twenty. It is not the UAE 21/30-then-30-day tiering. Some sites copy the UAE tiering onto Qatar pages; if a figure you were given jumps to a full month per year after five years, that is a UAE convention, not Article 54.

Who maintains this and how

Gulf Expat Tools, maintained by Feroz Sheikh, covers Qatar private-sector end-of-service. The arithmetic runs entirely in your browser - nothing is submitted and no Qatari system is queried - and it is checked against the Al Meezan text of Article 54 rather than a third-party summary.

Why use it

To walk into the HR conversation with a planning figure and the article behind it. This is an estimate only, not a filing, not legal advice and not a settlement statement; your employer and, if needed, the labour authority produce the final number.

Estimate only.

Common questions

Short answers for using this tool responsibly.

Is Qatar gratuity based on basic wage or gross salary?

Article 54 sets the statutory minimum on the last basic wage, so housing, transport, allowances and overtime are excluded unless your contract is more generous; confirm against your contract and the cited article.

Does resignation pay gratuity the same way as termination?

Once one completed year of service exists the statutory minimum applies whether you resign or are terminated, provided notice and contract obligations are met; confirm against your contract and the cited article.

Does unpaid leave count towards service?

Long unpaid leave is commonly excluded from countable service, and this tool only measures the two dates you enter, so adjust them for unpaid spells; confirm against your contract and the cited article.

What if I worked less than one year?

Below one completed year there is no statutory gratuity entitlement, and this tool returns a manual-review message instead of an amount; confirm against your contract and the cited article.

How does commission-only or variable pay work here?

Where no clear basic wage exists, such as commission-only pay, the basic figure must first be established from the contract or payroll record before any estimate is meaningful; confirm against your contract and the cited article.

Who pays the gratuity and when?

The employer pays end-of-service gratuity as part of the final settlement after employment ends, and unresolved amounts can be raised with the labour authority; confirm against your contract and the cited article.

Do resignation brackets that reduce gratuity apply in Qatar?

No. Resignation brackets are country-specific. Qatar Article 54 sets a flat 21 days per completed year on last basic wage with no reduction table for resignation, unlike the tiered resignation rules used in some other GCC states. Use each country tool for that country law.
