UAE Family Visa Renewal Documents (ICP and GDRFA)

A UAE family residence renewal is four files that have to be valid on the same week: the medical result for anyone the authority still tests, a renewed or linked Emirates ID, health insurance that the portal accepts, and a sponsor file that still proves you may keep those dependants. Miss one and the portal does not argue. It waits.

Which portal you open depends on which emirate issued the visa, not on where you happen to sleep this month. Dubai-issued residence goes through the General Directorate of Residency and Foreigners Affairs (GDRFA) — website, GDRFA Dubai app, DubaiNow, or an Amer centre. Abu Dhabi, Sharjah, Ajman, Umm Al Quwain, Ras Al Khaimah, and Fujairah files go through federal ICP Smart Services and the UAEICP app. Emirates ID itself is an ICP product even when the visa is Dubai’s. That split confuses first renewals more than any missing stamp.

I am Shekh Firoj. We run Gulf Expat Tools from Qatar as an educational desk. This article is a document map. It is not an approval, not a typing-centre invoice, and not a fee quote. Government amounts change by emirate, visa length, and channel. Confirm the current fee on the official service screen before you pay.

Start with the authority, then the pack

Open the visa page in the passport or the last e-visa PDF and read the issuing emirate. If it says Dubai, bookmark GDRFA’s renew-residency page and log in with UAE Pass. If it does not, use ICP and ICP Smart Services. Filing a Dubai visa in ICP, or a Sharjah visa in GDRFA, wastes the medical appointment you already booked.

Once you are in the right building, the dependant’s renewal still rides on you. A spouse or child cannot hold residence longer than the sponsor. If your own visa is close to expiry, renew yourself first or in the same sitting. Cancelling your residence without cancelling or transferring dependants is how families collect fines.

The four pillars of the file

1. Medical fitness

Adult dependants are the ones who almost always need a fresh medical fitness test at an authorised centre. Children under the age the authority currently exempts may skip it; do not guess the age cut from a 2018 blog. Book in the emirate that will process the visa, use a centre the portal lists, and keep the electronic result. HIV and TB screening is the core of the test people remember; the form the clinic prints is what ICP or GDRFA actually consume.

A medical that is still “in progress” will not carry a renewal. Neither will a test done in the wrong emirate if the receiving system cannot see it.

2. Emirates ID

Residence and Emirates ID are issued as a pair in the modern ICP flow. In Dubai, GDRFA still expects the ID stage to complete. Bring the current card, or the renewal receipt if you already applied. Biometrics are not requested every time; they tend to reappear after a long gap. Photograph rules (size, background) belong to ICP’s current spec, not to whatever your old typing centre laminated.

The ID number does not change on a normal renewal. The expiry does. If a bank or school still has the old date, that is a downstream problem — first get the immigration file through.

3. Health insurance

The policy must be active for the dependant when you submit, and it must be a product the emirate’s insurance and immigration systems recognise. In Dubai, family sponsors are expected to cover dependants; employer plans often cover only the employee. An expired policy, a visitor product, or a plan that does not list the dependant’s name is a silent rejection. Upload the membership or the digital certificate the portal asks for, not a payment receipt from an aggregator.

We will not name a dirham premium. Insurers and visa lengths differ. Confirm what GDRFA or ICP currently accept.

4. The sponsor file

This is the pile that proves you may still sponsor:

Your valid passport, residence, and Emirates ID.

Proof of relationship: attested marriage certificate for a spouse, attested birth certificates for children. If those were accepted at first issue, keep the same attested copies unless the portal asks for a fresh stamp.

Proof of income: a salary certificate (often required in Arabic for government, semi-government, and some free-zone sponsors) or the attested labour contract for private-sector staff.

Proof of housing: in Dubai, a registered Ejari tenancy with enough validity left on it, plus a recent DEWA bill, are the documents GDRFA-oriented checklists keep repeating. Other emirates want a tenancy or titled housing proof their ICP form lists. Do not invent a DEWA bill for a Sharjah contract unless the form asks.

Passports for every dependant should have comfortable remaining validity. “Six months” is the phrase unofficial guides use; the portal will tell you if a nearer expiry is a hard stop. Photographs, old visa copies, and UAE Pass access for the sponsor finish the practical kit.

A renewal order that usually wastes less time

Do not pay the visa step first and then discover the medical clinic is booked on Friday.

1. Check issuing emirate and expiry dates for every dependant, including the sponsor. 2. Confirm insurance is live and named correctly. 3. Complete medicals for everyone who needs them. 4. Log into GDRFA or ICP with UAE Pass, choose the renew residence service, and upload what that form lists — not a generic internet checklist. 5. Pay only the amount the official service shows. Amer centres and typing offices add their own service charge; that is not the government fee. 6. Finish Emirates ID collection or delivery when the system says it is ready.

Our UAE family residence renewal checker walks the same pillars as a readiness estimate. It cannot submit a file and it cannot tell you that you are approved.

Documents at a glance

| Piece | Typical purpose | Where it usually fails |

| — | — | — |

| Medical fitness | Adult dependants; clinic must be authorised | Wrong emirate clinic; result not yet in the system |

| Emirates ID | Linked to the new residence term | Expired card with no renewal request; photo spec ignored |

| Health insurance | Must be active and recognised | Employee-only plan; expired membership |

| Sponsor identity | Passport, residence, Emirates ID | Sponsor visa shorter than the dependant term you requested |

| Relationship papers | Attested marriage / birth certificates | Name mismatch with passports |

| Housing and income | Ejari + DEWA in many Dubai files; tenancy / salary elsewhere | Ejari expired; salary certificate not in the required language |

Fees, grace, and what we refuse to invent

Residence-renewal prices, medical prices, and Emirates ID prices are published inside the service, and they are not one UAE-wide sticker. Blogs quote bundles that mix Amer typing, insurance, and government lines. Those bundles go stale. Confirm the current fee in the official GDRFA or ICP service. If two websites disagree, they are both unofficial.

Grace after expiry is also not something we will freeze into a number here. Overstay fines exist. Renew before the stamp dies.

FAQ

I live in Sharjah but my visa was issued in Dubai. Which portal? Use GDRFA. The issuing emirate owns the file. Living in another emirate does not move you to ICP.

Do children need a medical test? Adults generally do. Young children are often exempt, but the age line belongs to the live service. Check GDRFA or ICP for that dependant rather than copying a friend’s kid.

Can I renew a family visa if my own visa expires next month? Not in any robust sense. Dependants cannot outlast the sponsor. Renew your residence first or together.

Is Ejari required outside Dubai? Ejari is a Dubai Land Department register. Other emirates have their own tenancy proof. Upload what the ICP form for that emirate lists.

Will you tell me the exact dirham total? No. That would be a fee quote we cannot stand behind. Open the official service; the payment step is the amount.

Is the Gulf Expat Tools checker an immigration application? No. It is an educational readiness list. File only on icp.gov.ae, smartservices.icp.gov.ae, or gdrfad.gov.ae.
